Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00am to 5:00pm on days protected beaches are open.
There are three (3) lifeguard protected beaches:
- Main Beach
- Georgica Beach
- Two Mile Hollow Beach
No fishing, water craft or surfboards are allowed in designated swimming areas.
Lifeguards are certified by the Suffolk County Department of Health after passing a Suffolk County test. The test is offered in June in East Hampton and applicants must be 16 years of age or older. There is one certification for ocean lifeguards and one for bay and pool lifeguards. There is also a Junior Lifeguard Program for children ages 10 to 15 years. Preparatory courses are offered at the YMCA RECenter.
The Village will sponsor a Lifeguard Tournament at Main Beach every summer for all agencies. For more information, call the Main Beach office at 631-324-0074.

The East Hampton Village lifeguards serve and protect the public on ocean beaches from Georgica Pond up to Indian Wells, which begins the East Hampton Town lifeguard jurisdiction. The village lifeguards are highly trained and take a qualifying exam to become an ocean lifeguard. They train daily to be effective with new techniques and rescue equipment!
RESPONSIBILITIES : Village Lifeguards are ready to assist the public at any moment! Their daily tasks include but are not limited to:
- Daily training
- Beach set up
- Daily radio checks
- Monitor the radio and ever changing water conditions
- Assist the public as needed
- Save swimmers in distress
- Assist EMS at the beach until medical help arrives
- Patrol unprotected beaches via ATV or Jet ski to ensure highest level of public safety
- Incident reports
- Daily beach reports
- Beach breakdown
The Village of East Hampton Lifeguards knows minutes matter. The response time is under 6 minutes from Georgica Beach to 2 Mile Hollow and even less to the beaches in between.
Village ocean lifeguards currently have a fleet of three (3) ATVs, two (2) side by side vehicles as well as two (2) jet skis. The newest Jet ski is a tremendous asset to the lifeguards to cut response time and allow lifeguards to modify rescue techniques as needed in larger swell.
We hope to see you at one of our beautiful Village beaches this summer season! And remember... always swim near a Lifeguard!
